Evergreen Madness

come explore my garden

Old Jack

The Jack tree is almost 50 years old. No one knows how old this tree is. I have been here a little over 15 years and even at that time, this was a very huge tree. Unfortunately Old Jack is dying... But even on his way out, he still feeds us

Bamboo Grove

One of the signature group of trees that sit proudly at the entrance of Wijeyakulasuriya Residence which is a landmark for those who want to navigate their way down Kohalwilla road - "The house with the bamboo grove"

Welcome to the jungle

Having my garden turned into a jungle filled with fruit trees and flower trees was one of the dreams that I had when I moved to Kelaniya 15 years ago. I love walking around “Diyata Uyana” looking at all the different types of trees and plants. I remember bringing the two Kohomba trees from my travels in Kataragama. There is a small 6 inch tall cemented area next to where I planted one of the trees and after several months, I remember feeling very happy about the tree growing up to be tall as 6 inches. Now the tree is taller than a two story building. It’s always good to take care of the trees and watch them grow over the years..

Sacred bo

I have always been fascinated by the Bo tree and it really calms me down every time i see a large tree. The sound of the Bo leaves swaying in the wind is like bells to my ears. I haven’t seen any Bo trees being planted in homes, but I went ahead and did it anyway. Waiting impatiently for the tree to grow up soon so that I can sit under it..

Six Mangoes

There are six mango trees in my garden and the mango season came just after the Covid-19 lock down happened. It was such a treat for me, the squirrels and the birds to eat so many mangoes which are of different taste to one another

Atteriya Fragrance

The Atteriya tree which is also called Orange Jasmine is one of the best trees in my garden since it flowers once a month or so and when that happens the entire area (including the road outside) is filled with its fragrance which is similar to Jasmine

Fox Tail Path

The pathway that leads to the back garden is lined up with Fox Tail trees along with Cleopatra head pots where instead of her hair, different water plants are in place. It was such a treat to watch these plants grow from their very small age to what they are today. The three trees at the front have good space to grow, but the last one at the back has a fight with one of the mango trees to go to the top for Sunlight

Ceylon Breadfruit

Another very old tree in my garden which was there before I came here. An endemic tree to Sri Lanka, this tree had been giving us fruits for the last 15 years and still it keeps doing it. The tree had entered the last stages of its life, but it had given us two new trees from its roots out of which one is already bearing fruit. It's such a beautiful site to see the entire tree will with fruits.
